OUR MANDATE

The broad mandate of the Institute is to conduct Applied Research on food animal species as well as forage, and to develop appropriate technologies in breeding and reproduction, nutrition and management with the ultimate and of improving the productivity of the animals for milk, meat, eggs, traction power etc. NAPRI is the only Research Institute in the country that is charged with the MANDATE of research in animal production. The specific mandates of the institute are:

  • Genetic and reproduction improvement of: livestock species- cattle, sheep, goats, swine, poultry, rabbits etc.
  • Pastures, crops and other plants for animal feeding.
  • Design and improvement of management practices of natural and sown pastures for livestock production.
  • Development of animal nutrition packages for animal fattening, diary production, animal traction, etc.  
  • Improvement of meat and diary products technologies.
  • Development of appropriate technologies for utilization of animal by-products including use of faeces or animal dung in bio-gas technology.
  • Design and fabrication of labour saving devices for livestock production.
  • Improvement of reproductive efficiency of livestock including artificial insemination (A.I.) and control of reproductive problems.
  • Farming systems including livestock diagnostic surveys and integration of crops and agro-forestry into livestock production systems.
  • Socio-economic problems of animal production, and in particular the production of meat, milk and other diary products.
  • Any other problems related to animal production, feed and nutrition.
    The Institute is also to provide the following services:
  • Laboratory and other technical services to livestock farmers, industries and others needing these services;
  • Standardization and quality control of manufactured animal feeds;
  • Extension research liaison with relevant Federal and State ministries, primary producers, industries and other users of research  results on matters of animal production and utilization  in collaboration with the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS);
  • Technical and vocational training in areas relevant to all the above.
    In carrying out its mandate, the Institute collaborates with relevant research institutes and organizations at national and international levels.
